Family Nights Out in Dudley: What Actually Works
Share
Dudley does family days out brilliantly: the zoo and castle, the Black Country Living Museum, the canals. But family nights out are thinner on the ground, especially ones a 10 year old and a 40 year old both genuinely enjoy. Here's the honest list, including the one most families haven't discovered yet.
The daytime classics
- Dudley Zoo and Castle: a proper castle with a zoo wrapped round it.
- Black Country Living Museum: time-travel with chips. As good as everyone says.
- Dudley Canal and Caverns: boat trips into limestone tunnels.
- Merry Hill and the Waterfront: shopping, food and the cinema for the standard-issue evening.
The night out most families haven't tried: live darts
Once a month or so, the Copthorne at Merry Hill turns into the loudest family-friendly room in the Black Country. Throwdown's live darts nights are all ages by design: under 14s tickets are £20 (adults £25, plus booking fee), and the room is full of families, kids in fancy dress, and grandparents who've watched darts for fifty years.
What makes it work for kids is the first hour. Doors open at 6pm and the room is theirs: practice dartboards to throw on, and the darts YouTubers they actually watch - Luke Bod, Big Lez, JR Darts and more - stood there happy to chat and take photos. Then the show starts at 7:30pm and the pros walk on: the reigning European Champion Gian van Veen in September, Daryl Gurney at Halloween, and Adrian Lewis at the Christmas party.
Parents' honest FAQ: yes there's a bar, yes it's loud in the best way, yes kids are welcome at every show, and yes they'll actually meet the players. The unwritten rule of the meet and greet queue is kids first.
Make it easy on yourself
The Copthorne has on-site parking and simple directions from anywhere in the Midlands, and the whole thing is done by 10pm - late enough to feel like a big night for the kids, early enough for school the next... well, we do run them on Saturdays for a reason.
