Luke Humphries Takes On the Creators in Throwdown's Biggest Night Yet

Well. Where do we even start?

On Saturday 4 July, World Cup and US Masters champion Luke Humphries rolled into The Copthorne, Dudley to take on the darts creators, and what followed was, Cool Hands down, the biggest and most successful Throwdown show we have ever put on. A sold-out crowd, a roof-lifting atmosphere, and a headliner who gave his time to every single person in the room.

The night kicked off at a hundred miles an hour. Luke's walk-on to 'I Predict a Riot' had the entire room on their feet before a single dart was thrown.

The creators didn't stand a chance (well, almost)

Unfortunately for the creators, and very fortunately for the fans, Luke was in ruthless form, dismantling every influencer put in front of him.

JR Darts gave it a real go and rattled in a cheeky 140 against the world number one, but Luke had been pre-warned that JR is more than handy on the oche. He simply shifted through the gears and cruised. Unlucky, JR. Josh Pearson couldn't find a way past him either, and that was even with a few extra darts thrown his way.

Every single creator, that is, except one: Little Lucas 180, the eight-year-old darting prodigy who only went and beat the world's best. He didn't just win, he stole the show and the hearts of everyone in the room. Take a bow, son.

The auction winners fancied a piece of the action too, and Steve "The Underdog" Underhill lived up to the name, taking his leg against Luke. The best part? His wife had paid for the leg as a birthday treat. Now that is a present.

Spare a thought for Big Lez, who was convinced this was finally going to be his first Throwdown win. Alas, the wait goes on. Will he break the duck at the next one, or is he heading for an unwanted 0-21 (the Undertaker's WrestleMania streak, in reverse)? You will just have to come to the Gian van Veen show to find out.

You can't teach class

What set the night apart was not just the darts. It was Luke himself. He stayed behind to make sure every fan got a photo and a signature, and even threw in an impromptu Q&A from the stage.

Asked whether Dave Chisnall would ever land a major, Luke didn't hesitate: "I'm going to say yes, because I want him to win one!" Cue Luke Bod asking the crowd to make some noise if they wanted to see Chizzy at Throwdown, and the room absolutely erupted. Message received.

The biggest pop of the night? A 26.

We saw a good few 180s and 26s across the night, and we very nearly saw the big fish: Luke lined up a 170 checkout but agonisingly missed the bullseye. So, so close.

Still, the loudest roar of the evening was reserved for Heyzy, who managed to hit a glorious 26. The 26 signs shot up, the crowd went wild, and Heyzy revelled in every second of the embarrassment. Never change.

There really is something about a Throwdown night: a buzz in the room you just do not get at other exhibitions.

Thank you

Huge thanks to the entire Throwdown team, to Luke Humphries for being so generous and endlessly entertaining, and to the team at The Copthorne Hotel, Dudley and their brilliant staff, who hosted us and looked after everyone in the room all night. Thanks too to MODUS for providing the silent auction, and to every one of our sponsors who helped make the night as special as it was. And most of all, to the fans. You are the reason we do all of this.

Next up: 2025 European Champion Gian van Veen takes to the Throwdown oche on Saturday 26 September. If Luke's night was anything to go by, you will not want to miss it.
